Jamie’s Story: Driving after a Stroke
Jamie enjoyed an active lifestyle, partaking in golf, the gym and walking his two dogs, until a stroke in March which brought his life to a halt. He was hospitalised, and experienced a deeply humbling moment when his son asked him about resuscitation. Luckily, it never came to that although when Jamie awoke the next day, he had right-side paralysis.
Jamie took control of his recovery with the support of physiotherapy, returning to his bungalow, where he lived alone, just 4 weeks later. The learning curve was steep as he had to adapt to living with only one hand.
He learned about East Anglian DriveAbility through Icanho (a rehabilitation centre for adults with a brain injury or stroke), who referred him for a driving assessment.
Jamie comments “Paul and Nicola put me fully at ease throughout the process both in the office and in the car. I was elated to be told I had passed the assessment and because it was the opinion of professional assessors it gave me the confidence to get on the road again.”
Jamie’s message to stroke survivors “Listen to the physios, be determined, and progress will come.”
We applaud your journey Jamie and wish you all the best with your future driving!
